EVENT: During the passage through Matanzas of the 1895 invasion, A Maceo's troops camped in El Desquite. A combative action took place when the insurgent camp was attacked by a Spanish guerrilla, which was defeated by the Mambises, at the cost of 12 Mambisa casualties.
Historical synthesis:
This monument was built in 1940. The bust of A Maceo, being in poor condition, was removed in 1998.
In 1999 the place was restored, and the Arab sculptor Antonio Mederos made a new bust.
It is considered a historical site, due to the event that occurred there. In 1999 he was processed to declare it a local monument, which was denied.
Personality:
To Maceo Grajales. Born in Santiago de Cuba into a legendary family. From a young age he joined the war until he was promoted by Major General of the Liberation Army by his exploits. He starred in the Baraguá Protest. Together with M Gómez, he carried out the invasion of the West.
